Can you tell me what this is?

It had these brown velvety buds on it all through winter


then the brown petals started to drop last week



these are the blooms that have emerged overhead.

    That beautiful shrub is a Michelia 'Scented Pearl'. A lovely fragrant small magnolia like flower a very pretty and tough medium to large shrub. It responds well to pruning to keep it compact.

    Yes I did think magnolia at first too, the leaves are very distinct.
